Polishing NZ Greenstone (Pounamu)
Просмотров 8862 дня назад
Today I'm attempting to polish some New Zealand Pounamu (or Greenstone) in my DIY Rock Tumbler. I'm also going to try a new technique that involves dry tumbling in walnut shells! Pounamu is a hard, durable rock found in the South Island of New Zealand. It's one of two types of stone, nephrite jade or translucent bowenite, and comes in a wide variety of colours. More info about Ponamu can be fou...

The DIY Rock Tumbler is getting a makeover... and a few safety improvements 😅 A few weeks back I posted a video showing you how I built my DIY Rock Tumbler and while it worked well it just took up too much room in my shed! I also had some great feedback in the comments about how to make the electrical side of things safer. Stay tuned, the tumbler is back in action and I have plenty of projects ...

In the future you can get different bearings and surround for them that includes a grease zerk nip so you can grease them each now and again for longevity and smooth opperation - better than the sealed bearings. Just a thought while watching :) Oh yeah and put a piece of rubber or felt (or both) between the bearing housing and the base they are bolted onto - same as the motor and anything else connected to the base and or wall surface. This will prevent vibration and get rid of a lot of noise - also help prevent fasteners from vibrating loose.
Ah that’s a great idea thanks I’ll add some rubber in between! I think you are right on the bearings, the ones I have now don’t seem particularly straight haha, the rotate a bit strange. I guess that’s what I get for buy cheap bearings 😂
I would keep the electronics all ABOVE the rollers. Less of a chance of fire if the tumblers leak.
Awesome job Chelsea of Harvey's room. Nice rock it's amazing whilst watching your video's how the kid's are growing up so fast.
The girls just started school! They are growing up way to fast 🥹
Shoot! After just that first round, the rocks were beautiful! I was blown away!
It’s neat to see how quickly they transform huh!
@@AdventuresWithRosy You are really making me want to pull out this rock tumbler kit I got, oh, more than 25 years ago and never used. It is sitting in my basement still in the store bag it came in! I'm kind of bad about buying things and then taking years to get around to use them.
Holy cow! Have I been watching this channel so long? Harvey was a baby a minute ago and now he is 7!? Where does the time go?
Crazy aye, the twins just started school on Monday too! 🥹
WOW Chelsea....What a great bedroom. Love it. Aren't rocks amazing?
She did an awesome job aye, he loves it ☺️
thats a pretty cool coloured rock.
Pretty cool aye! You guys must have found some nice rocks in the last couple of years?
@@AdventuresWithRosy We sure have, but we've been to scared to carry them around because I'm sure we are already more than heavy, although toby likes to hide stuff...
I’ve not long got into ‘rock hounding’, since I hit the road full time. It’s so much fun
Wicked. Love the Minecraft shelf. A stunning bit of work, Chelsea.
It’s neat huh! First time using a drop saw and she made quick work of it!
When are you going to get back into your caravan adventures?
Unfortunately our caravan is off getting repaired so not sure when our next adventure will be 😩
Did it taste nice?
Tastes like it looks 😂
I picked up some rocks like that from Gemstone Bay - I'm sure they are Pounamu and when I do that 'lick' test they go green.
Nice! I wonder if a few of mine came from there too 🤔 have you ever been to Birdlings Flat around Christchurch? I’ve heard that is the place to go for rock hunting!
@@AdventuresWithRosy No but next trip south who knows!
Where in the South Island did you gather your pounamu? Looks good
Thanks! Hokitika was where this stuff came from, down on the beach by the river mouth 👍
Hello, my name is Bronson and I'm a rock tumbler...
Haha it’s how I introduce myself to people now!
@@AdventuresWithRosy It's not your fault. Who collected all them rocks in the first place??????
The taste testing is valuable information. What do the other grits taste like?
Inquiring minds need to know... 😆
Haha great question, let me just google if Silicon Carbide is toxic and if it’s not I’ll do a taste test for you 😅
@@AdventuresWithRosy LOL. Yeah. I just checked and it's really toxic. And not very tasty.
That solar system sounds great, I wouldn't mind getting a spec and schematic sheet for it if you don't mind? I am saving to build a DIY system around the same specs with victron components
I’ll see if I can get if for ya 👍 that victron stuff is great aye, worth the money from what I hear!
Have just ordered my bits off eBay . Struggling to find the steel rod though , any help would be appreciated
You could try search Alloy Round Rod on eBay or stainless steel rod? Are you based in New Zealand? I brought mine of TradeMe
@@AdventuresWithRosy yeah Nz based. I found some on trade me but they couldn’t supply the size you have used. I will try eBay and see. Thanks so much for making this video it’s been so helpful already! I was literally about to spend $1500 on one when I stumbled across your build.
@@doseupwithdws oh nice one! Yeh they are a little expensive here in NZ, I like the look of the Lortone tumblers but they are a bit out of my price range!
Hi how are you Can u do more like this what items can go in a rock trumble
I sure can! I’ve got lots of rock tumbling videos coming up 😁 thanks for watching!
Wicked bro keep the vids coming
Will do ☺️ got a whole bunch of rocks on the tumbler right now!
birdlings flat beach just out of chch has this My grandad use to polish stones at his bach there...was so much fun
Oh I have heard good things about Birdlings beach! I will have to make the trip down sometime and hunt for some rocks 😁
I'm from Invercargill and have been to gemstone beach a few times, funny seeing this in my feed.
It’s a neat beach aye! I quite like that coastline actually, we stayed at monkey island for a few nights too which was a good spot!
3:50 ASMR going off
😂😂
You guys need to be careful, as the ëlite" M. will DEMAND money as they do nothing BUT demand money from your effort.
🤔
Great hobby, practice makes perfect, Only found two small sapphires, but clear, today , Yellow green, plus teal colour, Happy rock polishing, Cheers 🤠❤🦘🦘🇦🇺
Oh nice one! One day I’ll come hunt sapphires with you, would make a great video haha 😁
Apologies for the delay between videos, we are back to our regular scheduling now so if you like rock tumbling stay tuned 😁👍
"Big Friday night, tumbling rocks 'cos you've got kids, and you're nearly 40 😅" -wild, but I hear you. Went grocery shopping together tonight, big date night. Quite a process. It's good to hear you've fine-tuned the process.
Haha I like that, Grocery shopping date night 😅 atleast you can leave your kids home unattended haha
You Should try State Highway 38 past Waikaremoana, now that’s a windy road and about 100km of gravel road 👌
Oh wow that sounds fun! Might leave the kids at home when we do that one 😁
Hi folks. I've just discovered your channel. Um not sure where you are in your travels, but I see this episode was dated as at 3 yrs ago. I've been down Charming Creek mine. And must have been safe enough, because we were allowed to use the old carbide lamps, with naked flame. It was still in full production back then, early 60's. Seddonville its location, had an active hippie commune. Aaah yes, those were the days. Thank you for sharing. Atb.
You have been down in the mine! That is so cool, what an experience. It’s a great part of the country around there. We loved it. Unfortunately the travels are over,l (kids started school etc) so it’s just weekend trips for us now 😁
Drove up here on our way to Mt. Ruapehu. Now my car is full of vomit. Not highly recommended.
Yeh it’s a little winding that road isn’t it!
i planted 30 redwoods on our property in napier 20 years ago they are now 30 metres tall i also have dawn redwoods almost as big. dawn redwoods are deciduous
Oh nice! I really like the redwoods, wouldn’t mind planting a few at our place too 😀
We always make sure we,re facing outwards when we freedom camp, with the keys close. Never had to do a fast retreat after many freedom nights in strange places
That’s a really good idea! If you have a campervan then the getaway is pretty straightforward which is good! Glad to hear you have never had a problem 😁
Awesome video, who knew they check all that stuff.
They check heals aye! I was quite surprised 😁
Southerncross health insurance now has virtual consults called care hq. Really good for things they can treat via video. They have their limits but this is what we use frequently. 👍
@@cuddlypandas2995 oh yeh Chelsea has used that a few times and it’s been great!
Thanks
Thanks Greg that is very generous of you! Appreciate it 😀
Milford Sound (Correctly fjord) is one of the most isolated places in the world so don't have expectations of Vegas. The bus day trip from Queenstown is an absolute horror. Exhausting. Instead stay at Te Anau. We left Te Anau early like 07.00 and caught the first cruises for the day. Then take your time getting back to Te Anau. And the Te Anau caves trip is great too. Comments about the keas (birds) are all true.
Yeh I think I’d agree on the bus, I’ve not done it but it looks like a very long trip. Good idea to stay in Te Anau like you said, it’s a nice spot and it allows you to take your time going into Milford Sound
I’m planning a 4-5 week trip to see both island in November 2025. When do you advise on booking hotels and activities? If I book in advance it doesn’t offer me flexibility if weather changes the circumstances. Should I just pay when I do that activity? Or book online? Paying at the venue offers flexibility but don’t want to miss out if no open spots. For Franz Josep hello hike will there be a high chance that I have to reschedule? Your advice is greatly appreciated!
I think definitely book your hotels, for Milford Sound there are quite a few different boat operators so you could probably book a week or so in advance, so once you get to NZ check the weather and then book your activities I reckon. I’m not sure how busy the helicopter companies are for Franz Josef but they probably won’t be super busy in November so you could book a few days out. I’d book accomodation ahead of time though just so it’s secure 😀
@@AdventuresWithRosy thank you for the advice!
Plan to go in April 2025
Great! Hope you enjoy the trip it’s a lovely part of NZ
When you started the sentence, "About the birds and the bees..." I admit I was wondering just what you had planned for the land LOL
Hahah 😅
A great DIY project with the typical test and evolve process. I think you've done pretty well streamlining it, definitely making it safer, and fine tuning as you go. Keen to see some DIY barrel options trialed at some stage again.
Yeh some people have given some good feedback about the DIY barrels so I think I’m going to revisit it soon 😁
Don’t make fake Seaglass. It takes away from the real deal
Yeh good point! I just thought it would be fun to try 😁
@@cherylbesegai765 to the trained eye fake glass is easy to differentiate from genuine beach tumbled glass and where I’m from the fake stuff only adds to the value of the real thing
You can put a big nail or screw in the bottle and shake it real good and it should bust out the bottom in one piece
Oh good idea!
If you want it to look like actually beach glass you need a bigger barrel and faster speeds. You don’t want to polish them at all either. As for ur medium use large stones, ur glass of choice and a stage 1 grit or larger(sand works just fine). The grits purpose is to smooth and round the glass but to get a realistic beach glass finish you need to really beat the glass up good. Let’s assume ur piece has spent the necessary amount of time tumbling a genuine piece of beach glass will have different finish depending on its size. The larger the piece of glass the rougher the finish.
Ah interesting, I skipped the first few stages which will be why mine does not look beat up at all. I might have it a go with the sand one day to see how that turns out. I was wondering about the other rocks in there too but wasn’t sure if those rocks would chip/crack the glass?
I suggest using rough grit to shave the glass down until you get ur desired shape. Rinse out the pulverized grit every 3 days for best results. (I know that might sound like a waste of grit but that’s why I suggested sand)
@@devindioneff9473 ok that sounds great! I’m thinking of trying it with some thicker glass as well, like some bits of the bottom of the bottles
@@AdventuresWithRosy if you have a large drum and use fast speeds it will break the pieces into a size that are structurally sound. Most tumbler kits aren’t big enough or fast enough to worry about breaks even with large rocks tossed in since you only wanna fill ur tumbler half way at most
How much can it take? Can you rest your arms with full body weight on it (when sitting)?
Yup could can lean on them while working or eating etc, pretty sturdy!
@@AdventuresWithRosy Ok, great!
Gentlemen is not the farthest you can go karma is
Good point! You can go up further than Gentle Annie, all they way up to Kohaihai
Hi i like your video
Thanks for watching Mark!
We never saw the blue bottle break.. must of been something fancy and couldn't show that or he bought it.
Oh it was a Bombay sapphire him bottle 😁 I just forgot to put the shot in the shirt. There is a full video on my RUclips channel if you want to see that one get smashed 👍

Great review. I’m over the point in Oz looking to buy and I real like this style layout. Incredibly practical.
Yeh it’s a nice layout aye! I like the door being down the back by the club lounge! It’s the best layout for a couple I think!
Hi, I'm just looking into rock/glass tumbling as a hobby. May I ask where you get your grit supplies from? Is it here in NZ? Thanks.
Hi, I’ve been buying my grits from Rotorua Rock & Gemstone shop (online) I did buy some cheaper grits off trademe but they were not going as good of a job 👍
Brilliant construction 😊
Thanks very much!
